You've probably heard of Invisalign, the "invisible" braces system that has become extremely popular. However, you may not be totally invisalignsure how it works or what it can do for you. Below, Dr. Jeff DiMariano and Dr. Shaina DiMariano, your dentists in Sacramento, CA, has addressed a few of the frequent questions they hear from their patients who are interested in straightening their smile with Invisalign.

How does Invisalign work?

Braces are designed to apply pressure against the teeth that need to be shifted into the proper position. Invisalign works in a similar way, except the pressure comes from the custom-made flexible plastic aligners that fit against your teeth rather than brackets and wires. Each aligner is worn for a short time - typically between one week and three weeks - and then changed out for another aligner that will continue the process.

How many aligners will I need?

Your Sacramento dentist will determine how many aligners will be required to complete your treatment; patients usually need between 10 and 40 in their series. More can be made after your initial treatment is finished if necessary; this is known as a refinement.

Does Invisalign hurt?

There are some patients who report some achiness as their teeth adjust to a new aligner, but one of Invisalign's best features is that there are no sharp edges as you'd have with traditional braces. The majority of patients find the smooth, lightweight plastic to be very comfortable.

When can I take my aligners out?

For best results, your Sacramento dentist recommends all patients wear their Invisalign trays at least 20 hours a day, including while you sleep. They should only be removed during meals and for cleaning.
